TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. WE SPEAK AND THEY LISTEN.
The Voice that Makes a Difference assists deaf, blind, Deaf-blind and other individuals with unique needs to integrate into the community. We do this in two ways. Firstly by giving those with unique needs the capabilities they require to feel and be as effective in society as a fully able person; and secondly, by educating the community to the capabilities of the Deaf, Blind and Deaf-blind.
Our aim as a charitable organisation is to eliminate the boundaries which Deaf, Blind and Deaf-blind people face on a daily basis; to try and raise awareness; create opportunities both social and career wise; and to destroy the pejorative image that is associated with the Deaf, Blind and Deaf-blind. We are attempting to enable these young individuals to enjoy and live the normal lives they are entitled to and to enable others to recognise that they can do it.
Primarily, we are a charity that focuses on Deaf, Blind and Deaf-Blind children, and young adults. We are pursuing the equality and integration of these children and youths into everyday aspects of life. We are based in Northampton, with founder members that have been actively supporting the Deaf and Blind community for nearly a decade. For instance, our inclusive cinema programme has helped over 80,000 Deaf and Blind children throughout the UK to gain true access to the cinema based upon the principle of total communication.
There are currently 10 million people in the UK who have some form of hearing loss with more than 900,000 who are severely or profoundly deaf. There are 2 million who have sight loss and a further 250,000 with both hearing and sight loss. The majority of these people feel disenfranchised and overlooked, and in truth, most of them have been. We want to show these people that they have a place within society.
The Voice That Makes a Difference run a wide range of activities and workshops.
We provide screenings of the latest films at cinemas using total communication ie combining sign language, subtitles, sound and audio description. We run computer courses providing information in specialised formats to cater to specific impairments. We also run drama, animation, music and education based workshops as well as BSL courses.
